Stockholm Rope Meeting

The Rope Meeting takes place at the Cirkör training hall in Stockholm (Alby) from 3–5 April and brings together vertical aerialists from different generations, countries and practices for three days of sharing, training and exchange.

This is a collaboration between the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Stockholm Rope Meeting, Cirkuscentrum and Cirkus Cirkör. Cirkuscentrum members can participate in all the activities free of charge. Subtopia is supporting accommodation for one or two artists who are willing to share a room. A small travel grant can be applied for, by up to two artists from outside the Stockholm region, to Cirkuscentrum info@cirkuscentrum.se.

The programme includes a theory lecture by Adela Jordáková and workshops with Viivi Roiha and Marina Mezzogiorno-Brown (more on the workshops below).

It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow rope artists from many different places and practices.

Physiotherapy and Rope, a theory lecture by Adela Jordáková

Friday, April 3rd from 14:00-16:00

This session explores how tissues adapt to load and what tissue capacity means in the context of aerial training. We will discuss the importance of structured training for aerialists, including the role of off-apparatus conditioning in building resilience, improving performance, and reducing injury risk. Particular attention will be given to load management and the relationship between repetitive strain, low-grade inflammation, and overuse or underuse injuries commonly seen in rope practice.

The lecture will also address some of the most frequent injuries seen in vertical rope practitioners and explore practical strategies for reducing risk through training structure, recovery, and progressive loading. Finally, we will look at the basics of the body healing process and how to approach return to training after injury.

Adela Jordáková is a physiotherapist and performing artist working with circus artists and dancers. She performed her studies in Czech Republic (Charles University), Spain (CREAT) and Sweden (GIH and SKH). Her work focuses, among other things, on physical preparation that supports technical development, injury prevention, and long-term sustainability in circus practice.

Workshop with Viivi Roiha: Exploration and expansion in a limited space

Saturday, April 4th from 10:30-13:30

This workshop is an introduction to Viivi Roiha’s research with a very short rope. The focus will be on exploring the quality of movement, presence and the new spaces that the short rope offers us.

We will put our attention, through breathing, toward finding movement in places where we feel stuck. To help us in our practice in the air, we will start with exercises on the ground inspired by the martial art Systema.

Viivi Roiha is an international artist who has collaborated with many different companies, created her own artistic work and works as a choreographer for aerials. Her solo show, ‘V’, premiered in 2024 and featured her research with the short rope.

Workshop with Marina Mezzogiorno-Brown: Embodied Narratives

Sunday, April 5th from 11:00-14:00

This workshop uses meditative embodiment practices to identify the questions our bodies have and translate them into movement. The course shifts between individual reflection, guided visualizations, and bringing what we discover onto the aerial rope.

This work connects aerial practice to expressive or narrative performance by allowing imagery to emerge that conveys ideas or emotions linked to what we care about or need to share.

This work is derived from the show Marina is currently creating, titled “Closer”, which explores her personal history with loss, the AIDS crisis, and disco. She has been performing since 2013 with a range of international companies under chapiteaux, in theatres, and in site-specific works.

About the Stockholm Rope Meeting and its organizers

The Stockholm Rope Meeting began in 2024, the initiative of rope artist Hamish Tjoeng. The meeting takes place each year around Easter and gathers artists from Sweden and abroad for three days of sharing, training and connection. In 2026 Natalie Oleinik joined the organization and expanded the meeting to include workshops and lectures.
